Sevenhill’s Riesling vineyards are planted on gently undulating slopes up to 500 metres above sea level. Warm days and cool nights during the growing and ripening season are perfect for Riesling, as is the combination of stony and richer, red-loam soils.
The combination of a dry 2018 winter and a cold spring led to the vines setting a lower than average crop. Prolonged dry conditions and events of extreme heat during January and February reduced yields further. Picking commenced on the 26th of February and progressed at a frantic pace. With daytime maximum temperatures reaching above 35C for eight consecutive days, most varieties reached the desired sugar levels quite quickly. Riesling shrugged off the heat without stress, producing tight compact bunches and classic Clare Riesling lime and mineral characters.
The 2019 Inigo Riesling comes from three unique blocks on the Sevenhill property and was picked over consecutive days at the end of February. The grape must was chilled prior to pressing and then only the free-run juice used. After cold settling the juice was blended and fermented as one batch using a neutral yeast. Cool fermentation temperatures followed by fanatical attention to detail prior to bottling helped ensure vibrancy and fruit purity.
Lime, cumquat, lemon verbena and thyme shout Clare Valley Riesling on the aroma. The palate is tight and linear with a well-defined acid structure and clean citrus fruit finish. Produced from the free-run juice of estate-grown fruit.
