Very old Grenache vines – estimated planting 1920 – that yield a modest crop produce the fruit for our Inigo Grenache. Nestled in a small valley in the Sevenhill vineyards to the west of the winery, these old warriors are renowned for producing full-flavoured fruit.
The combination of a dry 2018 winter and a cold spring led to the vines setting a lower than average crop. Prolonged dry conditions and events of extreme heat during January and February reduced yields further. Picking commenced on the 26th of February and progressed at a frantic pace. With daytime maximum temperatures reaching above 35C for eight consecutive days, most varieties reach the desired sugar levels quite quickly. The last fruit came through the winery doors on the 19th of March.
The 2019 Grenache was handled gently in the winery with a minimal working of the fermentation cap and a relatively cool fermentation. Maturation was in 4 and 5 yr old French hogsheads, prior to bottling in September 2020.
A light red colour. An attractive potpourri aroma of freshly dried oregano, raspberry, cherry guava and confection. The palate is light bodied, yet is deceptively structured and long. The sweet cherry fruit well supported by very fine tannins running the length of the palate.
