The 2018 St Francis Xavier Single-Vineyard Riesling was produced with fruit from the Weikert Vineyard, one of Sevenhill’s five Riesling vineyards. This small vineyard (0.82ha) was planted in 1978 and consistently produces outstanding fruit to meet premium requirements.
The 2018 vintage started at Sevenhill on February 27 and was completed on April 10. Although spring and summer were marked by very dry conditions, rain at critical times during the growing and ripening season ensured sound development of the fruit. Warm days and cool nights leading into vintage and during the harvest allowed gentle development of the crop, which meant the fruit could be picked at optimum ripeness.
Winemaking The grapes for the 2018 St Francis Xavier Single-Vineyard Riesling were picked in the coolest period of the day on March 7 and crushed and de-stemmed. Only free-run juice was captured to minimise the impact of phenolics and tannins from the seeds and skins. The free-run juice was then racked to a stainless-steel tank and fermented at a cool temperature over 12 days.
The St Francis Xavier Riesling is grown in highly mineral and slatey soils, and this minerality is apparent on the nose and palate. It underpins the lively, zesty palate that also is rich in flavours of lime juice and lemon sorbet. The wine is a splendid example of how Riesling captures the character of its site.
