Vines

When indulged with close attention to moisture and grooming of its foliage, Merlot rewards the patience of this pampered care.


Vintage

While ample rain in the winter and spring of 2016 – the first for several years – laid a foundation for optimism, cooler temperatures in January and rain towards the end of the month slowed ripening in South Australia’s wine regions. A burst of hot weather in early February triggered some movement and crops began to ripen at a more normal pace in the kinder conditions.


Winemaking

The 2017 Inigo Merlot was selected from three parcels of fruit and destemmed and crushed into stainless-steel fermenters. Pump overs were done twice daily to extract tannins and flavour from the skin, without overworking the ferment to avoid any bitter seed tannins. After a 14-day ferment, the must was pumped to a membrane press for gentle extraction. Barrel maturation was over 16 months in two and three-year-old French oak hogsheads.


Attributes

Sevenhill’s location produces a Merlot with ample body and depth of flavour. Bright red-berry fruit marks the palate of the 2017 vintage, complemented by hints of chocolate. Lingering, soft tannins complete this wine of substantial character.
